I consider myself a reasonable free-market capitalist and I’m certainly in favor of pricing something higher than cost to make a profit. Heck, that’s how this whole thing works. But sometimes I have to stand in awe of some people’s aggressive audacity. Some instances are so unbelievable, they may as well warrant a sign that says, “Hey everyone, we think you’re all stupid enough to pay this price so take that!”
On November 26, 2023, the Trevor Bauer 2012 Panini Prizm Prizms Finite sold at auction from a reputable seller and collected 46 bids at $461.69. The market spoke and indicated the value of said item. Case closed, right? Well, according to one flipper, wrong.
The buyer didn’t waste any time and relisted this item on November 29, 2023 at $4,000, which is over a 766% markup. The reseller didn’t even bother creating a new scan; they just cropped out the branding on the original and repurposed it. While I appreciate the process efficiency, it comes with exactly zero creative integrity. Ridiculous is a compliment but it’s also the reality. Here it is, forever to remain unsold on eBay.
