1996 Ultra Home Run Kings is a scarce 12-card insert set that comes in a variety of parallels. Due to quality control problems, the set was issued in packs as redemptions that could be exchanged for base cards if requested prior to the December 1, 1996 deadline. A super rare Gold Medallion parallel also exists and was issued the same way. Essentially, Fleer wasn’t happy with the way the bronze foil translated onto the wood finish so it needed more time to correct the issue, which is why the redemptions were packed out.
The set roster features some of baseball’s most feared hitters from the era. The redeemed versions possess a realistic wood feel and as such can concave a bit over time. Be careful not to press these cards flat if they have already experienced natural bending as it would damage the wood and destroy the cards. Because of the condition sensitivity of this set, it’s important to house these cards in recessed cases wide enough to allow for enough space to accommodate this natural bend.
