1989 Upper Deck Baseball Errors Checklist

The following card was acquired sometime in late 2010 to Q1 of 2011 and this scan was produced and watermarked in March of 2011. It was scanned using the Canon CanoScan LiDE 100 and watermarked before I implemented Photoshop automation. This scan was initially used on an article about this particular card.

1989 Upper Deck is the premier issue from the company and was printed in enough volume to satisfy demand. It was the only set in 1989 to be issued across two separate series’: low (1-700) and high (701-800). Cards were released in foil wrappers with high series packs contain a mixture of both low and high series cards. This set is notable in that it’s the first to feature an embedded hologram in an effort to prevent counterfeiting. Notable rookie cards include: Jim Abbott, Sandy Alomar Jr., Dante Bichette, Craig Biggio, Steve Finley, Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, John Smoltz, and Omar Vizquel. For a while there, Tom Gordon, Greg Jefferies, Ricky Jordan, Ramon Martinez, Jerome Walton, and Todd Zeile were in demand as well.

1989 Upper Deck features a variety of errors with corrections made at different times in the print run. The breakdown of which is depicted in the following table. Some cards were issued with duplicate or missing holograms but they don’t appear to hold any significant demand and sometimes actually sell for less.

What’s Not Included in this Checklist:

• Uncorrected Errors (UERs): These include minor typos on card backs and/or fronts. Since these cards were never corrected, they’re just the standard cards in the set.
• Blank/Wrong Fronts/Backs: Examples beyond what’s stated are manufacturing scrap and weren’t issued in packs.
