1999 Upper Deck MVP Baseball Cards

1999 Upper Deck MVP baseball cards present player collectors with somewhat of a challenging run of cards to chase. All players in the 1999 Upper Deck MVP base set will have four to six unique parallels depending on who made it into the FanFest and Preview sets.

I like this set but it’s certainly a tough one to pull together. If your goal is to bring all of the different versions together of any one player, here’s what to expect:

  • Base: This is the standard issue card. The set is comprised of 220 cards.
  • Silver Script: These parallel the base set and depict flat silver foil facsimile player signatures on the card fronts. These were seeded into packs at a rate of 1:2.
  • Gold Script: These parallel the base set and depic flat gold foil facsimile player signatures on the card fronts. These were seeded into hobby packs and have a stated print run of 100.
  • Super Script: These parallel the base set and depic holo-foil facsimile player signatures on the card fronts. These come with a print run of just 25. These parallels perform exceedingly well in market, which is especially the case with superstars. For obvious reasons, this is often the most expensive version and may take some time to track down. I acquired mine in 2014, 15 years after its release.
  • FanFest: Only 30 players made it into this set. These were given to attendees at the annual FanFest in 3-card packs with a total yield of 15,000 packs. These feature flat silver FanFest logos on the card fronts.
  • Preview (existence unknown): This is a skip number set consisting of 110 cards. This set was produced to preview what the base set would look like. These were available in 5-card packs at retails stores. To my knowledge, these are difficult to differentiate from the base set. I’ve never seen a single card from this set.

I think this parallel concept was tastefully done. The holo-foil facsimile signature on the Super Script parallel is a favorite in terms of appearance. I’ve always appreciated the way Upper Deck moved around the design atmosphere with various foil colors and print runs. In addition to the many parallels, 1999 Upper Deck MVP Baseball offers a variety of insert sets to chase featuring rookies and veterans alike. If you’re a player collector looking for a challenge, try pulling a Super Script from a box of 1999 Upper Deck MVP.

Base Set Checklist:

1999 Upper Deck MVP is a 220-card set issued in 10-card packs with an SRP of $1.59. The base and Silver Script sets include a Ken Griffey Jr. sample card (S3) that was distributed to dealers and hobby media several weeks prior to the product’s release date. Michael Jordan is promo card S1 from 1999-00 Upper Deck MVP basketball, and Wayne Gretzky is promo card S2 from 1998-99 Upper Deck MVP hockey. Parallel(s): Silver Script, Gold Script /100, and Super Script /25.

1999 Upper Deck MVP Game Used Souvenirs is an 11-card set that features chips of actual game-used bats. Roughly 350 Mike Schmidt A Piece of History 500 Home Run Game-Used bat cards were released in this product. Mike Schmidt signed an additional 20 hand-serial-numbered examples.

    Almost certain the preview cards do not exist. As far as I know, none have ever surfaced of any player. I’ll add it back on my checklist when there is any evidence of their existence until then I’m chalking it up as an error by beckett.

    Hi!
    I collected MVP 99.
    I have only one Gold Script card. Til just a couple of days back I didnt realize that its a rare oddity. There’s NO SCRIPT. Just the name of the player in gold letters. CARLOS LEE in the place where should be the signature.
    Do you hAve any info on this matter?

      Hi Fernando,
      This is the first I’ve heard of a Gold Script without the script. Gold Script parallels don’t have player names in any foil lettering; that text is just part of the card design, nothing fancy, and it’s located diagonally along the left side of the card. Are you sure the card you have is from 1999 Upper Deck MVP?

    Of course! It’s got 2 times the player s name! One in gold foil. It’s 029/100 Im sure They probably hadnt the player signature for unknown reason.

    What is the rarest card you can find in this set. I used to collect these cards when I was younger. Did they make any Mark McGwire insert/autos? I had a pat burrell gold script with just his name printed on it.

      Thanks for the message. Likely the most valuable card from 1999 Upper Deck MVP is the Game Used Souvenirs Ken Griffey Jr. AU/24. There are plenty of Mark McGwire inserts in this product too, which are all stated in the article. The Pat Burrell Super Script /25 was a big card upon this product’s release.
