This Kobe Bryant 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Emerald has sold for $2 million making it the most ever paid for a Kobe Bryant card to date.
The card was brokered through the PWCC Marketplace and with a grade of BGS 8.5, it represents the finest specimen of its kind. Due to the way these cards were designed, they are incredibly condition sensitive. Condition flaws along the edges are common so its exceedingly rare to see anything grade in the NM condition category.
1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems parallels contain print runs to 100. However, the 100 print run is made up of two parts: the first 10 cards in print run are Emerald with the remaining 90 being Red. This makes the Emerald parallels some of the rarest and most desirable cards in the entire hobby.

Here’s a screenshot of a sale of the same card from back in April of 2012, almost 10 years ago. It’s not the same exact copy, however. I can remember watching this auction carefully and being completely floored by the end price. Now it seems like a bargain.
